Knee sleeves buying guide and FAQ

How to choose knee sleeves

Knee sleeves are neoprene tubes you pull on over your knee and wear for your whole session, warm-ups included. They add compression and keep your knees warm, and many lifters like the snug, locked-in feel they give on squats. They're different from knee wraps, which you wrap tight for your heaviest sets and take off between them. For a side-by-side, read Knee Sleeves vs Knee Wraps for Squats.

Thickness: 7mm vs 5mm

Our knee sleeves are 7mm, the thickness most powerlifters and heavy squatters choose. A 7mm sleeve feels firmer and warmer. A 5mm sleeve is more flexible, which some people prefer for CrossFit-style training with lots of running and jumping. If squats are the focus, 7mm is the usual pick.

Length

Each sleeve is 9.5 inches long, enough to cover above and below the kneecap. If you compete, check your federation's current rules on sleeve thickness and length before a meet. Our powerlifting meet checklist covers what to pack.

Getting the fit right

Fit matters more than anything else with knee sleeves. A sleeve that's too loose slides down and won't give you that snug feel. Our rule: size down for an extra snug fit, and size down if you're in between sizes. Measure around your kneecap with your leg straight, compare it with the size chart on the product page, and read the Knee Sleeve Sizing Guide for step-by-step help. New sleeves feel tight the first few times and get a little easier to pull on with use.

How to put them on

Sit down, bend your knee slightly, and pull the sleeve up from your ankle a few inches at a time, rather than yanking it all at once. Center it over your kneecap with the logo at the back. To take it off, peel it down inside out.

Care

Neoprene lasts longer with gentle care: hand wash in cool water with mild detergent and air dry away from heat. Our guide on how to wash knee sleeves and wrist wraps has the full steps.

Bundles

Want to cover your elbows too? The Knee Sleeve + Elbow Sleeve bundle pairs our 7mm knee sleeves with 7mm elbow sleeves. Still comparing options? Our best knee sleeves for squats guide walks through what to look for.

FAQ

Knee sleeves are neoprene tubes that slide over your
knee and give steady compression and warmth. You can wear them for every squat
session and leave them on between sets. Knee wraps are long elastic bands you
wrap tightly around your knee for heavy, near-max squats. They give more
support and rebound, but you should take them off between sets. Most lifters
start with knee sleeves.

Measure around the middle of your kneecap with your leg
straight, then compare that number to our size chart. Bay Gear Co. knee
sleeves come in Small, Medium, Large, and Xtra Large. If you’re between sizes,
size down. Knee sleeves should fit snugly for real compression, and a loose
sleeve won’t give the support you need.

7mm knee sleeves are thicker and stiffer. They give
more compression and support, and powerlifters and heavy squatters usually
prefer them. 5mm sleeves are more flexible and suit CrossFit, running, and
high-rep work. Bay Gear Co. knee sleeves are 7mm, 100% neoprene with
reinforced stitching, made for heavy squats, leg presses, and deadlifts. They
should feel tight to pull on but never painful or numbing.

Knee sleeves add compression and warmth, and many
lifters find that makes their knees feel more comfortable and stable while they
squat. Sleeves aren’t a medical treatment, though, and they won’t fix an
injury. If your knee pain is sharp, getting worse, or doesn’t go away, see a
doctor or physical therapist. Use knee sleeves as support gear for training,
not as a way to push through pain.
