Powerlifting Meet Checklist: What to Bring to Your First Meet
Powerlifting Meet Checklist: What to Bring to Your First Meet
Quick answer: For a powerlifting meet, bring your federation membership card and photo ID, a legal singlet, a T-shirt, shin-length deadlift socks, and your lifting shoes. Pack your belt, knee sleeves (or wraps if your division allows them), wrist wraps and chalk if allowed. Also bring food, water, a written plan for your openers, and a handler if you can. Check your federation's rulebook before meet day, because gear rules differ.
Your first powerlifting meet is exciting, and forgetting your singlet or socks is a stressful way to start it. This checklist covers everything to pack, from paperwork to gear to food, plus a few rulebook details first-time lifters often miss.
Rules differ by federation, so we use the USA Powerlifting Rulebook v2026.2 and the 2026 IPF Technical Rulebook as examples. Always read your own federation's current rules and your meet packet.

| Shin-length socks | USAPL requires them for deadlifts | Pack a spare pair |
| Lifting shoes | One pair for squat/bench, one for deadlift if you use two | Wear them in training first |
| Lifting belt | Allowed in raw and equipped lifting | Bring the belt you trained in |
| Knee sleeves | Allowed for every lift in USAPL (7mm max) | You must put them on yourself |
| Knee wraps | Only in some divisions | Check your division rules first |

Paperwork and Registration
- Federation membership card. USAPL lists the membership card as proof of membership, either a printed or electronic copy. Other federations have their own process.
- Photo ID. Usually needed at weigh-in.
- Meet confirmation and schedule. Know your flight, weigh-in time and when equipment check happens.
- Opening attempts. Many meets ask for your openers at weigh-in, so decide them ahead of time.
Competition Clothing
- Singlet. Required in most federations. The IPF only allows singlets from manufacturers on its approved list, so check before you buy one for an IPF-affiliated meet.
- T-shirt. USAPL requires a T-shirt under the singlet for squat and bench. It must have sleeves that end below the shoulder and above the elbow, with no pockets, buttons or zippers.
- Deadlift socks. USAPL requires shin-length socks that cover the entire shin to just below the knee for deadlifts. Socks can't touch your knee sleeves or wraps.
- Underwear and sports bra. Plain athletic underwear is standard. Check your rulebook for specifics.
- Shoes. Bring the shoes you trained in. Many lifters use one pair for squat and bench and flat shoes or deadlift slippers for deadlifts.
- Warm clothes. A hoodie and sweatpants help you stay warm between flights.
Lifting Gear
Lifting Belt
USAPL allows a belt in any lift, raw or equipped, up to 10 cm wide (the buckle can be wider), worn over your singlet. Bring the belt you trained with, not a new one. Not sure what a belt adds? See How Much Does a Lifting Belt Add? and How to Wear a Weightlifting Belt.
Knee Sleeves
USAPL allows knee sleeves in any lift. The sleeves must be single-ply neoprene, no thicker than 7mm and no longer than 30 cm, with no Velcro or straps. You also have to put them on yourself, with no help from another person or tricks like plastic bags. Practice getting them on before meet day. See the knee sleeve sizing guide for fit.
Knee Wraps
USAPL allows knee wraps only in Equipped and "Raw with Wraps." They're limited to 2 m by 8 cm, with no Velcro. The IPF allows them only in Equipped. If you're in a classic raw division, leave them at home. More in How Much Do Knee Wraps Add to Your Squat?
Wrist Wraps
USAPL allows wrist wraps in every lift, up to 1 m long and 8 cm wide. A thumb loop is allowed, but it can't be around your thumb or fingers during the lift. Learn the basics in How to Wear Wrist Wraps and Wrist Wraps for Bench Press.
Chalk
USAPL allows chalk and baby powder, and liquid chalk is allowed if it has no adhesive. Chalking your hands is fine, but you can't apply chalk straight onto the competition bar or bench. See Liquid Chalk vs Powder Chalk.
Gear That Usually Stays Home
- Lifting straps. USAPL only allows gear its rulebook specifically lists, and straps aren't on that list. They aren't among the personal gear the IPF rulebook covers either. Straps are still great for training. See How to Improve Grip Strength for Deadlifts to build a meet-ready grip.
- Elbow wraps and sleeves. Not on the USAPL list of allowed gear. Keep them for training.
A Note on Approved Gear Lists
The IPF and its affiliates only allow certain gear from manufacturers on their approved lists. Other federations don't require approved brands. Before meet day, check whether your federation has an approved list and whether your gear is on it. When in doubt, ask the meet director.
Food, Water and Comfort
- Water and an electrolyte drink
- Easy-to-digest food: whatever you normally eat around training
- Caffeine if you use it, timed for your first lift
- Folding chair or mat in case the warm-up room is crowded
- Headphones and a phone charger
- Small towel, toiletries and a spare change of clothes
Meet Day Plan
- Know your openers. Many lifters choose a weight they can lift even on a bad day.
- Bring a handler if you can. A friend or coach can track flights, load warm-ups and submit your next attempts.
- Write down your warm-up plan with weights and timing for each lift.
- Learn the commands. Squat, rack, press and down commands trip up first-timers. Practice them in training.
- Arrive early for weigh-in and equipment check.
The Week Before Your Meet
- Read the meet packet. Confirm the address, weigh-in window, flight schedule and any venue rules.
- Try on all your competition gear. Lift in your singlet, T-shirt, socks, sleeves and belt at least once so nothing feels new on the day.
- Practice the commands with a training partner calling them.
- Plan your attempts. Write openers, second and third attempt ranges for squat, bench and deadlift.
- Plan your travel and food so meet morning is calm.
